Word sense for the new age
This anecdote underscores two facts. First, all languages, including English, have incorporated lots of foreign words in their lexicon. That Bahasa Malaysia includes a number of foreign borrowings is, therefore, no cause for embarrassment nor should it be regarded as an indicator of linguistic inadequacy. Second, the recent announcement by the Malaysian government that it plans to crack down on the use of bahasa rojak - literally, a salad of languages - may prove to be a difficult task. One problem is deciding what constitutes bahasa rojak. Would Cyberjaya, Pejabat Pos, Bank Simpanan and Telekom Malaysia, for example, be compelled to have their names linguistically purified? Additionally, if the French word "kilometre" is deemed to be bahasa rojak, consider the problems that could arise if it is required to be replaced by a Bahasa Malaysia equivalent.
